The Alliance for the Prevention of Atrocity Crimes

About Us

The Alliance for the Prevention of Atrocity Crimes

We believe that the path to justice, accountability, and prevention begins with those who have lived through atrocity. Our approach is built on a simple yet revolutionary ethos: survivors lead the way. We create platforms for survivors to speak, shape policy, and build networks for change. Through leadership training, peer advocacy programs, and partnership with civil society, we empower survivors not just to tell their stories—but to transform their pain into powerful action. By working together, we place the tools of justice in the hands of those best positioned to envision and create it.

Our Mission

At the heart of our organisation lies a steadfast commitment: to bring together civil society, political activists, NGOs, and policymakers to champion justice, uphold the rule of law, prevent atrocities, and strengthen democracy worldwide. Guided by principles of peace-building and transitional justice, our mission is clear—to empower survivors and advocates for justice in the wake of mass atrocities, ensuring that those most affected have the power to ignite change.

Our Approach

We believe that sustainable peace and meaningful justice are only possible when ordinary people—those directly affected by conflict, war, or repression—are placed at the centre of change. Through dynamic collaboration with our global network of civil society organisations (CSOs), we foster spaces where diverse voices can unite, speak truth to power, and shape their futures.

Our work integrates the following pillars:

  • Advocacy: Driving national and international action for justice and democratic reform.
  • Response: Mobilising resources, expertise, and solidarity in times of crisis.
  • Support: Providing legal, psychosocial, and capacity-building support for survivors and frontline defenders.
  • Empowerment: Training and equipping advocates so their experiences and insights guide policies and accountability measures.

Our Impact

Over the past four years, in partnership with our parent organisation, The Duty Legacy, we have collaborated with a vibrant, global network of CSOs and grassroots organisations. Together, we have worked to:

  • Restore voice and agency to communities grappling with war and its aftermath,
  • Advance transitional justice mechanisms that centre survivors’ needs,
  • sAdvocate for democratic renewal in polaried societies,
  • Coordinate campaigns that hold perpetrators to account and inspire policy change.
  • Our initiatives have reached across borders—from supporting documentation of atrocity crimes to convening action-oriented forums for reform and resilience.

Collaboration is Our Strength

We know that lasting change flourishes when built on strong partnerships. Our coalition spans continents and contexts, unified by a vision that places power where it belongs: in the hands of those facing—and overcoming—extraordinary challenges. By sharing expertise, leveraging resources, and amplifying local leadership, we ensure that movements for justice and democracy are inclusive, resilient, and transformative.

Join Us

The need for principled action in the face of injustice has never been greater. As we continue to build bridges between survivors, advocates, and reformers, we invite you to stand with us. Together, we can empower ordinary people to achieve extraordinary change—bringing hope, justice, and peace to communities worldwide.

Our Objectives

Our Survivor-Centric Approach

At the core of our work is a conviction that survivors of atrocity crimes are not just beneficiaries of justice initiatives—they are essential change agents. We believe that meaningful prevention and response to mass atrocities is only possible when survivors are front and centre: their voices guiding interventions, their experiences shaping advocacy, and their insights lighting the path forward.

Listening First, Acting Together

Our approach starts with genuine listening. We work to create safe, inclusive forums where survivors can share their stories, articulate their needs, and propose solutions. By prioritising survivor voices, we ensure that our programs and advocacy reflect real-world challenges and aspirations rather than distant policy agendas.

Empowerment Through Advocacy

We support survivors to hone their advocacy—from personal storytelling to strategic engagement with national and international policymakers. Our capacity-building programs offer skills in public speaking, policy analysis, media outreach, and coalition-building. By accompanying survivors as they develop and amplify their advocacy, we help turn lived experience into actionable influence.

From Testimony to Transformation

Survivor testimony is powerful. We facilitate platforms for individuals and communities to tell their truths—at conferences, public hearings, and global forums—ensuring that those most affected are recognised as experts. These narratives not only drive accountability for atrocity crimes—they foster empathy and mobilise others to join the cause of prevention and justice.

Partnership With Purpose

We function as partners alongside survivors, not as gatekeepers. Our ethos is collaborative and restorative; we prioritise horizontal relationships, co-design initiatives, and share leadership with survivors and their representative organisations. Whether supporting grassroots projects, facilitating dialogue with authorities, or shaping international campaigns, we ensure that actions are survivor-informed at every step.

Building Sustainable Movements

Justice and prevention are not achieved overnight. We invest in long-term leadership, providing survivors with ongoing mentorship, resources, and networks that justly respond to trauma and foster resilience. Through this approach, we help transform survivors’ pain into purpose—and individual advocacy into collective impact.

By putting survivors at the heart of everything we do, we honour their dignity, elevate their agency, and co-create pathways to a more just and peaceful future.
